We are seeking your help to Stop the 2026 Transportation Sales Tax which has:
- Zero Management Oversight
- Vaguely "Maybe, Maybe Not list" and "Maybe Add On Later Projects" Unknown allowed
- 16.7% Tax Increase for 3/4 Of A Billion of Your Tax Dollars
- Over 9 Years
- No Guaranteed to Start or Complete Vital Safety Projects
Additionally:
- Full Project Details Timeline and Projects Costs lacking. FIOA has been submitted to obtain information for Public dissemination, by Citizens for Responsible Tax.
- Possible Ethic Violations being investigated by Citizens for Responsible Tax.
- 2018 Transportation Sales Tax Projects are only 10% Completed as of this posting
- Additional $25 Million in Taxes from 2018 Tax collected have NOT been directed to Necessary Safety Projects
- 2018 Projects we already paid for are repeated
- 2018 Projects, the public, YOU, requested to be removed are listed as "On Hold", not "Deleted" as promised. Did they lie to us?
Citizens for Responsible Tax is formed by Beaufort County civic leaders and former Beaufort County elected officials. Each member has actively participated in the following actions:
- Influencing various Beaufort County Council and/or School Board issues
- Being a member of either a School Board or County Council committee/panel
- Chairing or participating in local issue groups, clubs, and/or actions
While many of our members have a political affiliation, the Citizens for Responsible Tax is nonpartisan and focused on "kitchen table" issues that will adversely affect county residents and their families, whether through public policy, projects, programs, or taxation.
This GoFundMe page is solely focused on a proposed 2026 Transportation Sales Tax Referendum and the Act 145 amended property tax loophole that has eliminated all property taxes for 31 multifamily properties managed and owned corporately.
- The sales tax referendum will increase your sales tax 16.7% and is set to appear on our November 3 ballot
- A College of Charleston 2023 Tourism Impact Survey states that Beaufort County revenue from tourism sales tax contributions is only 24% countywide
- If the sales tax referendum fails, they’ve threatened to increase your property taxes
- Additionally, Beaufort County already has a new sales tax referendum in the works, whether it fails or passes on the November ballot
- This property tax loophole is not available for your private- or business-owned property
- The loophole has already 31 properties and climbing. It has cost the county $9.7 million in lost tax revenue
- Those who have been approved, like The Preserve in Port Royal, are exempt from all property taxes FOREVER!
These are the narrowly defined issues the Citizens for Responsible Tax is focused on. We are seeking donations to help fund our efforts, which will include payments for:
- Filing Freedom of Information applications
- Investigating and filing ethics violations
- Producing informational materials, including but not limited to flyers, posters, roadside signs, newspaper and magazine ads
- Hosting and seeking county permits for rallies and public meetings
- Any additional costs, unknown at this time and not anticipated
Any and all donations will only be allotted to these actions, and the GoFundMe site will only exist for the duration of this campaign. A separate bank account is being created and opened to examination to verify that funds are, in fact, used for said expenses.
