On November 25th, Christina Collins experienced a sudden, life-altering accident. After finishing a Zoom call, she stepped into a dark hallway at home and tripped over Maple, the family dog. As she fell, her ankle twisted violently, causing her to land hard on her right side on the hardwood floor. Alone but able to reach her phone, Christina called 911 and was rushed to El Camino Hospital.

The extent of Christina’s injuries was significant and complex. She sustained multiple fractures and serious injuries affecting both her right arm and right leg. Most critically, she suffered a displaced fracture of her tibia just below the knee, along with additional injuries to her knee, ankle, and foot. The most severe injuries were to her leg and her elbow, both of which will require surgical intervention. Due to the tibia fracture, ankle injury, and multiple fractures to her foot and toes, Christina is currently unable to bear weight or walk at all, and even basic movement and repositioning in bed require assistance. She is also unable to use her dominant arm.

Because of the complexity of her injuries, Christina required a prolonged hospital stay for pain management before being transferred to a skilled nursing facility. Rehabilitation has only just begun and is currently limited to very early strengthening of her uninjured left side. No rehabilitation can yet be done on her injured right arm or leg, as she is awaiting further medical and surgical decisions. At this stage, her care is focused on stabilization, pain control, and preventing further decline while next steps are determined.

Complicating her recovery is a pre-existing pain condition, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), which makes healing more difficult and unpredictable and requires careful medical coordination and extended support. Christina now faces upcoming evaluations and likely surgeries at Stanford, along with additional hospitalization, transportation needs, and long-term care.

This accident has turned the Collins family’s world upside down during the holiday season. Funds raised will help cover medical expenses, rehabilitation, transportation, in-home care, and ongoing support, allowing the family to focus on Christina’s treatment and long road to recovery.
