Help Christian Butterfield in His Legal Battle
This fund is to support former Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD) Officer Christian Butterfield against prosecution for being a merciful officer. If you haven’t heard or read the story, former Officer Butterfield conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with two young men. The young men had marijuana in the car, but Butterfield decided to not arrest the young men because the possession would be a felony and severely impact the rest of their lives.
In his attempt to be an empathetic officer, Butterfield decided to give these young men a break and disposed of the marijuana by throwing it away in the VBPD dumpster. The VBPD started a criminal investigation into Butterfield’s actions, and Butterfield subsequently resigned. Shortly after, the VBPD filed charges for felony tampering with evidence and obtained a warrant for Butterfield’s arrest. Butterfield turned himself in on a $10,000 bond and was released the same day.
Now, with a felony charge against him, Butterfield’s dedication to public service has been disrupted by a legal battle that could alter his life forever. As the charge casts a cloud over Butterfield, even Butterfield’s current attempts to find other employment have proven futile.
With the prospect of a long and difficult legal battle ahead, any and all donations toward Butterfield’s legal expenses would be greatly appreciated. Remaining additional funds will be donated to the Humane Society of VB & IRC.
A small background on Mr. Butterfield. He served in the United States Marine Corps, served as a correctional officer/deputy in the state of Florida, is a certified Firefighter/EMT and worked for two departments in the state of Florida, and lastly a Police Officer. Butterfield has always felt a strong calling to serve his country and community.
