My name is Chrissie, and I’m a 48-year-old trans woman, and I live in Berlin with my husband and two kids.

 

I work in the tourism industry and depend on tips to make a living. My husband also has a low-income job, and we barely make enough to provide for our family.

 

The bottom line is that I have nothing left to save up for gender reassignment surgery. And I need this surgery to feel free and enjoy my life for myself and my kids and feel safe around other people.

 

Even though we have pretty good health insurance in Germany, it doesn’t cover it entirely regarding trans health. Transgender people are a low priority here in Germany and other countries.

 

I need to pay for a certain amount myself for surgery for example. I also need to support my family for the three months of sick leave because of my surgery since I'm only covered for one month's worth of salary.

I want to be a parent like everyone else. I want to go to the lake with my kids just like any other parent. But, I want to wear a bikini or bathing suit to feel safe and to protect myself and my children.
