This fund is being raised to support Huy Do (Chris) in his desperate fight for life through an URGENT and life-saving bone marrow transplant, which could grant him more precious time with his loved ones.
About Huy (Chris)
My partner, Chris, a thirty-year-old man, has always been a pillar of strength and kindness to everyone around him. It breaks my heart to share that he is now in the fight of his life against an aggressive and life-threatening cancer—Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) with TP53 mutations.
Chris and I once called Katherine, NT our home, but life took a heartbreaking turn, leading us to Adelaide, SA for Chris's extensive cancer treatment. We're now reaching out with heavy hearts, seeking for help to cover the overwhelming costs of his life-saving bone marrow transplant and ongoing treatments, none of which are covered by insurance, as we don’t have Medicare or any other public healthcare support.
We received the devastating news from his doctor that without this procedure, there is no other option to extend his life, and the aggressive nature of his cancer means that death could come at any moment. Even with the unbearable pain and overwhelming difficulties, Chris has never given up hope or his battle for a better future.
I’ll never forget the words he once said to me, words that will stay with me forever: “I know there is a long and tough journey ahead for me to go home, but I always believe that we can make it through and return to the peaceful life we used to have.”
What Happened to Chris?
On June 13th, 2024, our lives were shattered when a routine blood test turned into a nightmare. Chris received a late-night call from his GP, urgently directing him to the hospital. Within hours at Royal Darwin Hospital, we were devastated to informed that Chris had leukemia.
Since then, he has been fighting for his life in the hospital. He battled through his first 3 terrible nights in the ICU, struggling with struggling for every breath. On the third day, Chris underwent emergency heart surgery after the cancer attacked his heart.
The situation was so critical that Chris was airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) for life-saving treatment. Upon arrival, I was told that Chris might lose his vision and that other organs could fail at any moment due to the rapid spread of cancer.
He spent the next 12 days in the ICU, receiving his first round of chemotherapy and treatment for latent tuberculosis, diagnosed at the same time. I will never forget those 12 days, watching my husband fight for every moment of survival. Though not always conscious due to the severe side effects of chemotherapy, he remained determined to keep going, driven by the hope of returning home.
After a month with full devastating moments, we faced another blow: despite chemotherapy, 60% of the cancer cells remained in his bone marrow, delaying a transplant. On July 27th, Chris began his second round of chemotherapy, one of his last options. Miraculously, a recent biopsy showed a reduction in cancer cells, giving us a small but priceless hope.
What’s Next for Chris?
This fund is to cover the costs of Chris’s bone marrow transplant, ongoing treatments, and the emergency medical flight that saved his life.
Chris’s battle is far from over. The next critical step is the transplant, and while we were overjoyed that Chris now qualifies, our hopes were crushed when we learned it could cost up to $400,000.
On top of that, Chris already owes $320,000 in medical bills, with more rising up as he remains hospitalized which may not cover by insurance, plus $25,200 for the emergency flight from Darwin to Adelaide. Since June, neither of us has been able to work, putting an significant financial strain on our family.
We’re turning to friends, family, and the community for help. Your support can make all the difference. By contributing to this fund, you’re not just helping with medical bills—you’re giving Chris a chance to fight for his life. You’re showing him he’s not alone in this battle.
