Chris Burney, a devoted husband, father, and friend, has always been there for those around him. As a fellow shipmate aboard the USS America, CV 66, I have witnessed Chris's strength, resilience, and unwavering support for others. On October 3, 2025, Chris's life changed dramatically when he suffered a traumatic brain injury while working in construction in St. Louis, Missouri. He fell from a rooftop, landing on the left side of his face, and was rushed to the hospital where he was sedated for brain swelling and spent weeks in the ICU. After intensive care and rehabilitation, Chris was released to his sister's home in Florida, where he continues to await further therapy in his home state.
During this challenging time, Chris's wife, Vicki, and his sisters, Shelly and Julie, discovered that his employer had not paid into Workman's Compensation, leaving the family without crucial coverage. Vicki and his sisters took turns staying by Chris's side, incurring significant expenses for hotels and unpaid leave. The financial strain has been overwhelming, causing the family to fall behind on their mortgage and utilities. Despite Vicki's recent return to work, their finances have been exhausted, and they have had to rely on the generosity of close friends and family to get by. Chris and Vicki's adopted grandchildren, Brooklyn (18) and Brayden (14), have also been deeply affected by this crisis.
Chris's return to work remains uncertain, and the burden placed on his family by the lack of Workman's Compensation has been devastating. We are reaching out to our community for help. Any support—whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser—will make a meaningful difference in helping Chris and his family recover from this setback. Thank you for your kindness, compassion, and generosity.
