Support Chloe Johnson Overcome Severe Aplastic Anemia
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Lisa Makaruk, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my coworker, Deanna Johnson, whose 13-year-old daughter, Chloe, is bravely battling severe aplastic anemia, a rare and life-threatening condition.
What is Severe Aplastic Anemia?
Severe aplastic anemia is a critical bone marrow failure disorder where the body stops producing enough blood cells. This leaves Chloe with little to no immune system, making her highly vulnerable to infections, uncontrolled bleeding, and extreme fatigue. Even a mild cold can be life-threatening, requiring her to stay in a special isolation room at the hospital.
Chloe’s Journey
Chloe’s battle began on July 30, 2024, when she was admitted to the hospital. She was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia in August 2024 and has remained hospitalized ever since. Now, eight months later, as of April 2025, Chloe continues her fight. Her treatment and journey has been grueling, including:
• Immune Suppression Therapy.
• Hundreds of blood and platelet transfusions.
• Multiple procedures, CT scans, and X-rays.
• A hemolysis reaction sent her to the pediatric ICU.
• Hemorrhaging in her eyes resulted in blindness in both eyes that lasted weeks, with recovery in only one eye.
• An acute kidney injury with uncertain long-term effects resulted in weeks of monitoring her kidney function.
• Hemorrhaging in her small intestine resulted in weeks of stomach pumping.
• A bone marrow transplant, with several months still needed for her immune system to recover.
• As part of the transplant, Chloe had to go through chemotherapy and full-body radiation.
• Periods of extreme nausea, pain, and inability to eat throughout her hospital stay.
Due to her compromised immune system, Chloe has been isolated, unable to attend 7th grade or see her friends, family, or even her sister, except in rare circumstances. This isolation, combined with her medical challenges, has been emotionally and physically exhausting for Chloe and her family.
The Family’s Struggle
Chloe’s parents, Deanna and Jonas Johnson, have not worked since August 2024, dedicating themselves to supporting Chloe. The family faces mounting expenses, including:
• Medical costs not covered by healthcare.
• Daily parking fees for hospital visits.
• General household expenses like groceries and utilities.
• Mental health support for the family to cope with this challenging time.
Our Goal
We’ve set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to help ease the financial burden on Chloe’s family. Your support will help cover:
• Residual medical expenses.
• Parking costs for Deanna and Jonas’s daily hospital visits.
• Every day, household expenses.
• Entertainment and activities to lift Chloe’s and her family's spirits during her long hospital stay.
