Can you imagine coming home to everything you own gone forever? That’s what happened to Chirrell Robinson.
Chirrell Robinson also known as “Whoopi” is a Providence local in long-term recovery. Whoopi is someone who has dedicated her life to helping some of the most vulnerable folks in our community. Whoopi uses her lived experience as someone that has faced incarceration, homelessness, and substance use here in Providence to show them that everyone is capable of transforming their life.
Whoopi leads street-based outreach as the Senior outreach worker at Project Weber/Renew. She was one of the first original clients of RENEW and after getting into recovery joined the team. Whoopi has played a vital role in the growth of the organization for the past 7 years and has impacted countless lives for the better.
She can be spotted on Cranston Street Monday - Friday providing basic needs like water, food, needle exchange, Narcan, and recovery services. Someone like Whoopi helps Providence be a safer, healthier, and more supported community.
Whoopi was part of a wrongful unwarranted eviction in her home of the past 6 years after Blackstone Group who got her name mixed up with another tenant in the building and entered the wrong apartment and took everything Whoopi owned including her family heirlooms and pictures of her mother who has passed are now gone forever. Blackstone group took everything in her home and left it empty, they took all her clothes, furniture, belonging, and everything was thrown in the garbage.
Whoopi has been an outstanding tenant and she has always paid her rent on time and there was absolutely not a single reason for her to be evicted other than the property management's ignorance and lack of respect for their tenants to not even properly check If they had the right apartment before evicting someone. Right now there is an eviction moratorium and although it was illegal to evict tenants in Rhode Island that didn’t stop Blackstone Group. Although Whoopi has been back and forth in court battles for months nothing has been settle yet, we are asking for community support to help Chirrell get through this time.
