Support Chippy's Fight After a Dog Attack

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Rachel (Chippy’s mom). Chippy is a very sweet little 7 month old dachshund. His hobbies include popping bubbles, saying hi to boats on Lake Ontario, and sneaking kisses to people & cats. At daycare, he likes to spend his days in the Cat Room play with kittens. He has zero aggression, doesn’t bite, and doesn’t bark. (Sadly, this means he also has zero defensive skills in the event of an attack.) He’s just a little friend.

On June 15, 2024 Chippy was being introduced to a small poodle mix at an “AllSizes” off-leash park in Upstate NY when a pit bull ran up and snatched him. Chippy was grabbed by the base of his ear as the pit bull thrashed his head back and forth. After an intense physical altercation & wrestling with 3 adults, Chippy was finally released from the pit’s grip.

At the ER, it was discovered his injuries were more severe than anticipated, and we keep finding more.
  • Multiple lacerations with continued hemorrhaging
  • ear was ripped from top of skull to his jaw
  • shattered ear canal
  • muscle + tissue was lifted off the cranium
  • loss of blink function in the right eye
  • update June 25: bacterial infection + total amputation of the right ear

Little Chippy was transported to another city for specialized surgery and his condition is TBD at this point. Vitals are stable for the most part. He is fighting the good fight.

At the moment, his medical bills are so much higher than anyone expected.
  • $2,000+ for wound care at the ER in East Syracuse
  • Est. $9,000-12,000 for TECA (total ear canal ablation) surgery at the hospital in Latham, Albany
  • $3,000 for additional antibiotics due to bacterial infection from the bacteria in the pit bull’s mouth + complete amputation of the right ear

I’m doing everything we can to try to hold the attacker’s owner responsible and understand it probably wasn’t intentional. But at the end of the day, we have to take ownership of our dogs. A police report has been filed & I am reaching out to lawyers - but also if you have any referrals please let me know. It’s been a battle working with local authorities to get justice for Chippy. Thanks for all the well wishes and support - seriously, it means so much that people care. I’ll update as soon as I can.

If you’d like to help with the crazy high bills, thanks so much. We love you. We hope you win the lottery one day and all your wishes come true. But also, please don’t feel pressured that you have to. Just reading and sharing this helps. Thanks a bunch.

Update June 25, 2024:
Sadly his cultures test came back and there was a nasty bacterial infection from the bite so he had to be rushed back to the hospital. Unfortunately, the necrotic tissue was too much and his right ear was completely amputated. I picked him up today, he seems stable, but also super unbalanced. Can’t blame him, he’s missing his big floppy ear now. They’ve got him on some pretty good sedatives so hopefully he’ll get plenty rest and heal properly. New pic of my one-eared-Frankenweenie below.
