On Tuesday, July 22nd, we started to notice Chino (our furbaby) was not eating and a little lethargic. He was still drinking water and playing with his sister but definitely was off. On Wednesday, he seemed sad and very attached to us and tried to eat but seemed to not want to chew his food. We thought maybe, he had hurt his mouth playing with toys. By Thursday morning, he was still refusing to eat and was out of it. I called the vet and they said to bring him in first thing in the morning.

Friday morning, the vet took one look at him and said “get him to an ER”. We quickly took him to VEG in shrewsbury.

This is where things took a turn for the worst. Chino stopped walking and started to become unresponsive. Chino had gone into shock. His limbs had gone completely cold and he was no longer alert. The vets worked fast to get him fluids, draw blood etc. They administered glucose and thankfully they made him become more alert. They ran test after test and told us his body was severely dehydrated and his protein was so low they were worried he would have free fluid in his abdomen. Luckily the ultrasound showed nothing but they still couldn’t explain what was happening. After being on fluids, medication and testing - Chino was diagnosed with Addison’s disease and was currently suffering from an Addisonian Crisis.

Once they were able to diagnose him they started treatment immediately. Chino was still out of it and needed to be hospitalized over night. They said he could be there till Monday if things did not start improving. All day yesterday, he still would not eat and numbers weren’t where they needed to be. He also couldn’t stand and was very lethargic. We really started to prepare for the worst. We had family visit him and just made sure he felt love all around him.

I know the power of love and prayer because within a couple of hours, chino was alert and even standing. He even had the energy to go for a short walk outside with his dad. They ran more tests and finally, his numbers were starting to show improvement. But he wasn’t out of the woods yet. After more care and medicine, chino was clinically stable for a dog who had suffered an Addisonian Crisis.

Today, chino is finally home with us and has been showing signs of improvement and even ate some blueberries. It has been a very emotional week for our family and we honestly thought we would be saying bye to our fur baby.

With all the care he received, unfortunately came a very hefty bill and we’ve had to max out a care credit and still have a balance to be paid. We’ve never been ones to ask and we work hard for everything we have. But things have been a little hard the past 2 months and we’ve had a change in income and unfortunately are struggling. Literally, ANYTHING helps and we don’t expect donations. But community is a powerful thing. We thank you for even reading our story. God bless you
