My name is Javier Freire, and I am a Chilean doctoral student at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. I write this with a heavy heart. While I am here in California, my home region of Biobío is being devastated by wildfires. I am launching this campaign because I know these communities intimately. I know how smoke, fire, and uncertainty affect the most vulnerable, and I know that once the flames die down, the hardest part begins: rebuilding.
As students at UC Berkeley and members of the international community, we have come together to support this initiative and to put our skills and networks at the service of the families affected. We want this effort to reflect our community’s solidarity with Chile at a critical moment.
How will the funds be managed?
Direct Support: All contributions will be transferred directly to the official institutional accounts of the fire departments in the affected areas (Penco–Lirquén–Tomé), enabling them to continue assisting impacted families. Mi nombre es Javier Freire y soy un estudiante chileno de doctorado en la Escuela de Salud Pública de la Universidad de California, Berkeley. Hoy escribo con el corazón apretado. Mientras me encuentro en California, mi región natal del Biobío está siendo devastada por incendios forestales. Inicio esta campaña porque conozco profundamente la realidad de estas comunidades. Sé cómo el humo, el fuego y la incertidumbre afectan a los más vulnerables, y también sé que, cuando las llamas se apagan, comienza lo más difícil: la reconstrucción.
Como estudiantes de UC Berkeley y miembros de la comunidad internacional, nos hemos organizado para apoyar esta iniciativa y poner nuestras capacidades al servicio de las familias afectadas. Queremos que este esfuerzo refleje el compromiso solidario de nuestra comunidad con Chile en un momento tan crítico.
¿Cómo se gestionarán los fondos?
Ayuda directa: Los recursos recaudados se enviarán íntegramente a las cuentas institucionales de los cuerpos de bomberos de las zonas afectadas (Penco–Lirquén–Tomé), para que puedan continuar apoyando a las personas damnificadas.
