Hello Friends,
This is Brenda. As you all are aware, Gus is once again in a very tough situation.
Gus had another stroke last Monday, October 6th. While in the hospital, they noticed his hemoglobin level was at a 6. They gave him a blood transfusion, but then he was vomiting blood. The nurse didn't feel it was important, and they wanted to discharge him from the hospital. I pushed for them to figure out if he was bleeding internally and demanded an endoscopy. They agreed to do one. While they were doing the scope, they found a large tumor in Gus's stomach. Since he was on blood thinners, they could not biopsy the tumor that day. The following day, they went back in and took several biopsies. We are still awaiting the final results, but they already set him up with Dr. Nadeem at the cancer center.
Then Saturday came along. I had a phone meeting with the doctor at 10 am. We hung up, and I proceeded to the hospital. I arrived at the hospital at noon. Gus was flat on the bed, no pillows, just the bed. I startled him when I came in, and he didn't look right. I asked him what was going on, and he just kept mumbling. Finally, he stated they think he had another stroke. They had already done a CAT scan (no dye) and were waiting to send him down for an MRI. I asked what the hell happened from 10 am-12 pm, and no one could answer that. They brought him to MRI but then returned him, stating that when they did the biopsy, they put a clip in, and NO ONE knew if it was MRI safe. NO ONE CALLED THE DOCTOR TO ASK EITHER. Finally, they decided to ask the doctor on Monday about the clip. It was MRI safe, but they still never did the MRI. Since the incident, Gus is confused, hallucinating, and non-coherent. He has had a mild fever, high blood pressure, and other issues. He comes and goes out of a mental state where he knows where he is and then doesn't. At times, he recognizes people, but other times he doesn't. He is severely hallucinating, and it's most of the day. No one seems to know what is going on.
Last night, they decided to test for seizures, so they moved him to ICU.
Please keep Gus in your prayers.
I created this new GoFundMe because Gus was switched over to Medicare in July.
He has had to meet his deductible on his old insurance in January, then now a new insurance deductible for Medicare starting in July, and in January 2026, the Medicare deductible starts over AGAIN. It's so hard to keep up with the costs with all the hospital visits, and the costs of his 23 prescriptions have gone up so much since starting on Medicare, which has its own deductible.
When the doctor stated he would need acute rehab when leaving the hospital, Medicare denied him. He can no longer walk at this point. During our phone conference prior to the event on Saturday, the doctor explained he needs to go for inpatient rehab, and the only thing Gus is concerned about is not having the money. Chemo/radiation, whichever they decide, will need to be outpatient, and Gus will need round-the-clock care and help getting to and from appointments.
I ask again, please find it in your heart to help.
If you can't help, please share.
