Support Chicken Ordinance Change for Wolcott
Donation protected
As it stands today, Wolcott, CT does not allow residents to keep poultry on properties that are less than 200,000 sq ft (approximately 4.5 acres). Three years ago, I called the town’s zoning office to ask about keeping chickens. I was told that as long as my neighbors don’t complain, I was allowed to have chickens. After 3 years of keeping chickens, I received a notice of violation indicating that I would have to remove my chickens from the property to bring the property back into regulation.
Our family started our chicken journey because we have two young children with autism. I wanted to feed them whole, nutritious foods. My children have special needs, and eggs are an important part of their neurological well-being and development. However, it was hard to keep up with feeding my children organic foods without breaking the bank. I started with a few hens and have lovingly maintained a flock since.
There are other towns in Connecticut that allow chicken keeping on lots smaller than 4 acres with appropriate regulations. Examples of such towns include Newington and Meriden. I have contacted our town's Zoning and Planning office and it will cost $510 to petition to amend the regulation to allow chickens. Would you be willing to support changing the chicken ordinance in Wolcott to mimic those towns that allow residents to keep chickens on less than 4.5 acres? If so, support us. Support the chicken tenders!
