Help Juniata Students Support Refugee Shelter in Mexico
Donation protected
Juniata College students hope that you will join us in providing donations to the Albergue Jesus El Buen Pastor (the Shelter of Jesus the Good Shepherd) in Tapachula, Mexico. Olga Sánchez Martínez, the founder and director of this shelter, provides refuge and support to hundreds of people ranging from children to the elderly who have fled their home countries. ALL of the money we raise will go to Olga’s migrant shelter.
Hello! We are students from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania who are taking a class called “Eyewitness to Migration.” In our class, we have been learning about the historical and current effects of migration crises, and in May our class culminates in a trip to Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico.
On this trip we will be visiting a refugee shelter in the city of Tapachula called Albergue Jesus El Buen Pastor or the Shelter of Jesus the Good Shepherd. This shelter is run by a truly selfless woman named Olga Sánchez Martínez, who began operating this shelter out of her own home and funding it by selling food, used clothing, and begging on the streets before being able to expand it to a freestanding location. Her shelter provides refuge and support to all people ranging from children to the elderly who are seeking better lives away from their home countries.
To learn more about the incredible work Olga does at this shelter, we encourage you to read an article from the Wall Street Journal that featured the shelter for its humanitarian efforts (linked below) and visit the shelter's website which is also linked below. Additionally, we have attached a document that has the description of the shelter's founding and who they support from their website already translated into English, for convenience.
Every year, our trip raises money for a donation to this shelter, and this year we have decided to expand our fundraising efforts past our campus. Olga’s shelter needs our support now more than ever as it provides sanctuary for ever-increasing numbers of migrants who are trapped between terrible conditions in South/Central America and harsh immigration legislation in the United States. Please consider giving anything you can spare, as all proceeds from this GoFundMe will go directly to providing food, clothing, and access to resources and medical care for the refugees at this shelter. Thank you!
