Olive was only supposed to stay for a week. A little getaway for Olive while her owner enjoyed a getaway of his own. One week turned into two, two weeks turned into three, and eventually Olive's owner decided she was too much for him to handle. He no longer wanted her and planned to sell her to a breeder because of her unique merle coloring. But Cherry wasn't about to let that happen. Concerned that Olive could end up in the hands of a breeder who cared more about her coloring than her well-being, Cherry paid the original owner more than he had originally paid for Olive to ensure she would have a loving home.
But Olive needed more than just a loving home. She needed corrective surgery to help her breathe better, along with proper socialization that she had missed out on as a puppy. Determined to give Olive the best life possible, Cherry paid for her surgery and invested in a professional dog trainer to help Olive overcome her anxiety. During training, Olive was put on a slip knot leash and taken to a park for exposure of the real world. Unfortunately, Olive became extremely overwhelmed by everything passing by, repeatedly lunging against the leash and putting dangerous pressure on her neck and airway. Within moments, her tongue turned blue, and she began coughing up white foam. What was supposed to be a simple training exercise had turned into a life-threatening emergency.
Olive was immediately rushed to the emergency vet, where doctors began working to open her airway. Veterinarians suspected a serious breathing complication caused by negative pressure in her lungs, along with aspiration pneumonia from inhaling vomit. Olive needed emergency medical care, including a staphylectomy and stenotic nares surgery. Cherry didn't hesitate to approve the treatment, even knowing it would come at an enormous financial cost. She arranged to have payments deducted directly from her paycheck to ensure Olive received the care she needed. $40,000 later, Olive is alive and doing well!
But that happy ending came at a tremendous financial cost to Cherry, who had already invested so much into giving Olive a better life. We're not asking for the entire $40,000 bill to be covered. We're simply hoping to help ease some of the financial burden Cherry has taken on. Any donation, no matter how small, would mean the world. And if you're unable to donate, sharing Olive's story would be just as appreciated.
