Hello, my name is Chelsea. I’m a single mom to a beautiful six-year-old boy named Sebastian. Our days were always packed with adventures! Rock climbing, snorkeling in the canal, cave exploring, building forts in the woods, and collecting turtles and frogs. I never spent more than 6 hours in bed a day until my accident on July 26th. My whole world changed.
My primary source of transportation has been an electric scooter for the past 5 and a half years. Due to a seizure condition, it’s nearly impossible for me to get my license. I never complained though; my scooter got me and my son wherever we needed to be! On July 26th at 9:30 am, it was a beautiful Saturday morning! I left my friend's house and started heading home, which was only a 5-minute ride. I was driving on the shoulder along traffic when out of nowhere, an Explorer pulled out directly in front of me. There was no avoiding it. The first part of my body that hit the vehicle was my head, which went through the driver's side passenger window, ultimately saving my life since I didn’t have a helmet on. I had gashes in my head and glass in my face. When my body hit the ground, I immediately knew that both my legs were broken. I felt the bones sticking out of my legs. I shattered my left femur and broke my hip. My right leg had a tib-fib plateau break. Both legs have titanium rods, screws, and plates. They say 6 months to a year until I can walk assisted by a walker. I was denied by 7 rehab centers due to the extensive damage to my legs and my non-weight-bearing status. I also broke my left hand. But even with being denied therapy, I literally drag myself off the bed to the bedside toilet and I drag myself on and off my wheelchair. I can’t stand, I can’t walk, but I can’t give up. I have my little guy depending on me.
I was in the hospital for a week and they released me that following Friday to go home and heal. I have a hospital bed in my basement now. Before they discharged me from Reading Hospital, I pleaded with them to run more tests. I just didn’t feel right. I was sweating profusely, my heart was pounding, and my right leg hurt so bad. Yet the hospital assured me that with time I’d feel better. Less than 24 hours after I was released from the hospital, my pain had tripled and my leg was beyond swollen. My mother said maybe I twisted the wrong way in my sleep, so I iced my knee and wore my immobilizer and toughed it out. Till Monday came and I couldn’t bear the pain anymore. I called an ambulance to take me back to Reading Hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, my right leg was profusely leaking fluids through my staples. The hospital kept me on IV antibiotics and kept me. Wednesday came and it was decided I would undergo another surgery, this time to open my leg and manually wash the infection out. Mind you, I told them I felt sick and they didn’t listen and they dismissed me. I remained in the hospital till Monday, August 11, when they finally discharged me with a PICC line to administer IV antibiotics myself 3 times a day till September 17, at which time I will be scheduling a third surgery on my right leg to now take the contaminated hardware out. It is yet unknown whether they are straight taking the hardware out or whether they will need to replace the hardware.
My world has been flipped upside down. I was so active, and now I can’t stand or walk. Wheelchair bound. I have no income, and every penny I had went into rent. I’m going to lose my house. I’ve lost so much in such a short period of time, and my poor son, I know he’s going through it too. This is my desperate plea for help. Rent is my main focus, but also food, clothes, and medical supplies. This is my last-ditch effort. If I lose my home, I lose my son, and I’ll end up being sent to an assisted living facility for the duration of my healing. Please, any type of help I can get, I will appreciate from the bottom of my heart.
