Charlie Ochylski has always been the rock and the heart of his family—a hard-working, positive, and loving man who brings joy to everyone around him. After multiple hospital visits late last year as a result of feeling continuously ill, Charlie was diagnosed with a very rare but aggressive Bile Duct Cancer called Cholangiocarcinoma. On February 3rd, he underwent surgery at the University of Michigan hospital to remove the discovered tumor, bile ducts, gallbladder, lymph nodes, and half of his liver; reconstructing a new bile duct to connect to the remaining portion of his liver.
His journey since then has not been an easy path, and there is a long road of recovery ahead. Complications after the initial surgery led to two more operations and a much longer hospital stay than anyone expected. As of today, February 17th, Charlie is still recovering, but the process must move slowly. Each day brings new challenges, but he continues to fight with the same strength and optimism that defines him. He may need another procedure before being released, and will need extended home care and continued cancer treatments.
Charlie’s focus right now is getting back home, where he can be surrounded by his family and eventually back in the gym cheering on his grandkids at their volleyball tournaments—a sport he absolutely loves to watch and coach. A proud coach himself in the community, Charlie has always poured his heart into mentoring and encouraging young athletes to be their best selves.
His wife, Sheryl, has been an incredible source of strength and is by his side every step of the way. He’s a proud dad to two amazing kids—Chelsea (married to Dave) and Marshall (married to Candice)—a grandfather to two wonderful girls, and the devoted “papa” to a whole crew of beloved grand pets. While the family remains hopeful and focused on recovery, the challenges have been significant. Medical bills, travel, and the loss of income—since Charlie is the primary household earner—have created a heavy financial burden that continues to grow.
Charlie’s positivity and kindness have touched so many lives, and now, in this moment, he needs a little help. He would never ask for help himself; in fact, he is the first one to always lend a hand to others, but we know that even the smallest gesture right now from friends, family, and our community can add up to make a tremendous difference. We are reaching out to ask for any support you can offer—whether it’s a donation or simply sending positive thoughts Charlie’s way. Your kindness and generosity mean more than words can express.
