UPDATE:
Good morning, family and friends,
It is with a breaking heart that I write this post. Charles’ cancer journey began a year ago, and in that year, we’ve made 57 trips to Dallas for chemotherapy, radiation, ER visits, surgery, and long hospital stays. Charles has fought with everything he has, and he’s done it all with a kind, courageous spirit.
On Tuesday, the doctors called a family meeting and shared that there is nothing more medicine can offer. Our hearts are crushed, and we are feeling every emotion of grief but our hope is not gone. God is still able to do what medicine cannot. God is still working.
Charles has endured so much, COVID, blood clots, endless treatments and he is still standing. Last night I prayed and asked God if He hears my cries. I asked for clarity. This morning, I woke to rain and storms a reminder that God knows I’m stubborn and would have pushed for medicine as long as I could. But sometimes, He has to shut a door completely so we see that we no longer need to walk through it. That it’s time to focus on what matters most our time together.
I know the reality of where we are. I’m not in denial. But I also know that just because the storm has intensified doesn’t mean we stop believing. Healing comes in many forms. God’s will be done.
Today, we leave the hospital that has cared for Charles for a year and likely for the last time. It feels surreal and so final. Please, I ask for your prayers for Charles’ body, his mind, and his spirit. For our family, our kids, our grandkids. For our safety as we make the drive home. And for peace and strength for whatever lies ahead.
Thank you for the love, support, and prayers you’ve given us. We still need them. Please come see us!!! And when people ask what we need, the only answer I have is: a MIRACLE
Nothing else matters right now! we just need Charles.
Love y’all,
Casey & Charles Smith
Charles Journey of Healing
Hello, we are the kids of Charles Smith, and we are starting this in good faith for those that know him.
Charles is battling stage 4 colon cancer. This, as you know, comes with stress, pain, and expense. Charles has been unable to work for almost a year now (DIAGNOSIS: MARCH 2024) due to this diagnosis and the pain and treatments that come along with it. His wife has been supporting their family financially on one income. Medical bills, medical insurance with no employee, transportation, hotel stays, and medication can all become very expensive with only one income.
Due to Charles working for AISD and not paying into social security he was denied SSDI. He has his 40 credits from all his years of working but they only look at your last 5 years and that was when he was at AISD as a plumber. They have appealed the decision but it is still pending.
He currently has COBRA medical insurance that is $550 per month, he is eligible for that for one more year.
We appreciate all of the prayers and love from everyone thus far. We are just asking to help lift a little bit of the financial burden off of a family who needs it, would appreciate it, but would never ask for it. In spite of their feelings, we feel like this would go to show them that people are wanting to bless others during hard times. Charles is a husband to Casey Smith, a father to 4 young men, one daughter, and a grandfather to 6 grandchildren. Charles loves people and will talk to just about any stranger and carry on a great conversation. To know Charles is to love Charles, and we are so thankful to call him Dad and Grandpa.
Thank you in advance to all those who feel led to give anything. The amount doesn’t matter. Even just a share, comment, and prayer would mean the most to this family.
