After 47 years of incarceration, FREEDOM finally came to Charles McNeair. May 4, 2026, was a joyous day of celebration for Charles and all those who know and love him. Yet, imagine how overwhelming the world must feel! At 63 years old, Charles walked out of prison into a world that had changed dramatically since he was taken away as a 16-year-old in 1979—a scared, illiterate Black teenager in the Racist South. He endured beatings, threats, and intimidation after his arrest. With no evidence, no trial, and frightened for his life, he signed a guilty plea, promised an appeal that never came. His entire adult life was taken away, and he lost 47 years from 1979 to 2026, growing from a teenager to a 63-year-old man behind bars.
But prison did not break Charles. He learned to read, earned his GED, and grew into a man of deep faith, humility, and excellent character. He survived a system that breaks most men. Over five years ago, individuals began working to help him, eventually forming an official 501c3 non-profit—Advocates for Charles McNeair. A strong coalition of community support grew, with protests, visits to the Governor’s Office, petitions, letters, and requests for parole. People of all races and backgrounds came together, believing that his life mattered. The police chief and Mayor stepped forward in support, and the Lexington City Council passed a resolution on his behalf in 2023. Finally, after years of advocacy, the parole board granted him freedom. He walked out of prison with friends and a loving family waiting, but he must now rebuild a life that was taken from him as a teenager.
Now that Charles is free, he needs support for his long-term needs. Thanks to his family, his basic needs are being met! The transition back into the community can be overwhelming, especially for someone who has spent so many years away from society. With your help, we can give Charles the stability and dignity he deserves as he starts this new chapter. All donations will go to Advocates for Charles McNeair, an official 501 (c) (3) non-profit. Board Members will manage disbursement, and all money will be used only for Charles McNeair.
Thank you so much for your support. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference in Charles’s life. Please give and share in the movement—Charles McNeair matters! Together, we can show Charles—and others like him—that he is not alone and that his community stands with him.
