Hello, my name is Charity Davis. I'm a working mother of 2 wonderful boys aged 14 and 9. The boys, their father and I all live in a 3 bedroom house in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. I'm also an aunt to my brother's 4 boys, aged 15, 10, 7, and 9 months.
A few months ago, through a series of unfortunate events that I won't detail here, I was asked by the State to take temporary custody of my nephews. If I'd been unwilling to do so, they boys would have likely gone into the foster care system and been separated. The extended family and I certainly didn't want that to happen, so I took them all in.
This, understandably, put a strain on our resources, given that the size of my household literally doubled overnight. As a voluntary family guardian to the boys, there is little the State is willing to do to provide financial assistance. The boys' father is providing all that he can, and our extended family has pitched in as much as they've been able, but we're struggling.
It's not just the cost of having extra mouths to feed. The situation dictates that the boys be taken to counseling sessions and wellness checks. This means taking off time from my job to do so, which means less hours works and smaller paychecks.
This is a temporary situation. We've been told that my brother's requirements to regain custody will be resolved by January. Until then, we could really use some help.
Anything you're willing to give would be tremendous.
