Many street dogs in Sri Lanka struggle to find food and clean water, leading to malnutrition and dehydration. They often suffer from communicable diseases, skin rashes, ticks, and fleas due to lack of proper care and medical attention.

During our time in Tangalle, fate led us to a chance encounter that would forever change us. Over breakfast, we met a local man who spoke of his sister, Chanika, a woman of remarkable courage and selflessness. With bare hands and a deep sense of empathy, she has taken it upon herself to care for over 50 stray dogs.

Our journey led us to Chanika's doorstep, where we witnessed firsthand the tireless work she performs each day. From tending to the sick and injured to providing comfort to weary souls, Chanika's dedication knows no bounds.

Behind Chanika's steadfast resolve lies a poignant truth: her job is far from glamorous, yet, she embraces it with humility and grace, guided by a profound empathy for those in need.

Despite the challenges she faces, and the seemingly endless and overwhelming stray dog crisis in Sri Lanka, she persists, driven by her unwavering belief in the inherent worth of every living being.

Chanika, a school teacher by profession, supports the dog rescue using her modest earnings and a few donations she has received. Financial constraints often force Chanika to make difficult decisions, such as feeding the dogs every other day.

Despite the financial strain, she remains resolute in her mission to provide food, clean water, medical care, and love to every dog she encounters. It's a vision she relentlessly pursues, fueled by a deep-seated commitment to kindness and compassion.
