My name is Breannah, I'm a full-time student and this is Chanel, my 3 y.o. pup who's been with me since she was a puppy. She's a lively, energetic, and strong dog with her birthday coming up in November. In late August, I brought her to the emergency vet after seeing her vomit, shiver, and her energy suddenly dropping. Upon preliminary findings of her x-ray, there was suspicion of a kidney stone and concern for her kidney health, which was quite sudden and led me to decide to hospitalize her overnight at the emergency vet.
The cost of an overnight hospitalization came out to $4,561.04, which included the ER consultation exam, x-ray, fast ultrasounds, IV fluids, medications, blood work, urinalysis, and other charges. There was a lack of clarity in how long Chanel needed to be hospitalized for, nor clarity of the definite findings of her condition to know how to treat her as her urinalysis was still being processed. I decided to bring her home to get other opinions and treat her with medication. The urinalysis results were provided to me a week after her discharge, which confirmed she had E. coli and to continue her on antibiotics at home.
I brought her to her primary vet to get another opinion and get a full abdomen ultrasound done, which came out to $90 for another exam and $737 to get the ultrasound done. It confirmed that there was a kidney stone obstruction in her left kidney urinary tract and some concerns with the condition of her right kidney. I took her to two other vet hospitals to get other opinions on her condition and treatment options that would be the best and safest to extend her life. With the last vet, they provided a better prognosis for her in that the removal of the stone would likely preserve her kidneys through the surgical procedure of a ureterotomy since her right kidney is still functioning. They provided the estimate between $8,000 to $9,285 for the entire surgical procedure, which includes the 1-2 post-hospitalization stays.
I had her blood work and urinalysis rechecked along with a urine culture through this same vet during her exam, which came out to a total of $1,015.83. This had to be done prior to scheduling Chanel's surgery to ensure the antibiotics addressed the infection and that she's healthy enough to go through with the procedure.
I want to see Chanel live longer since she's still young and do the best I can to navigate this situation while in school. Since she's been home with me, she still drinks water and eats what she can along with still wanting to play despite the difficulties of her condition. She's a tough dog doing the best she can, and removing the stone will help her live longer.
These vet costs, tests, and procedures are very expensive, totaling $6,403.87 so far using my credit cards and CareCredit. Chanel's pet insurance only covered a maximum of $1,475.88 and will only reimburse around $2,000 for the surgery. Any donations will go towards the cost of Chanel's surgery, additional tests that are needed, post-care/follow-up appointments, and helping to pay for the existing vet bills.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this. Any shares or donations are much appreciated.
Edit (9/13): Chanel was taken to the emergency vet yesterday since it was difficult to get a hold of the other vet and find out when to schedule the surgery. I didn't want anymore delay and had to go with a SUB device surgery which would let the urine flow out to the bladder as it turned out scar tissue formed around the stone. She's recovering well, and the surgery costed much greater than I hoped for. Instead, it's around 15k which includes the hospitalization stays. Any donations, shares, and posting the GoFundMe would be greatly appreciated to reduce the financial burden. Again, as I also expressed in the update, I'm greatly appreciative to those who've helped so far.
