Support Chad's Battle Against Rare Cancer

We’ve put together this account because our funny, caring, loving friend needs our support right now. Many of you have had the chance to know Chad personally, and if you have, then I’m sure he’s made you laugh and brought a smile to your face. For those of you who don’t know him, Chad Luh is an amazing husband to Meghan and a loving father to three kids: Caleb, who is in college, Emma, who is going into 8th grade, and Gavin, who is going into 5th grade.

On June 9, Chad was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain, and the doctors noticed a concerning spot on the scan. Unfortunately, after having lots more testing and imaging the past few weeks, Chad has been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer in the neuroendocrine cells of his GI tract that has spread to lymph nodes in his chest and abdomen. He met with a surgical oncologist and was informed he will need major abdominal surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Afterward, he will be on a monthly injection of medication to slow the growth of the tumor. He will also need to undergo one or more surgeries after the first one as part of the treatment plan.

Chad and Meghan found a specialist surgeon at the University of Iowa who has seen more than 350 cases of this type of cancer. The surgery will be complicated because of the location of the tumor. It will be lengthy (6-8 hours) and will require the expertise of this surgeon. His surgery is scheduled for August 20. After the surgery, the recovery time is a week in the hospital and another potential week near the hospital.

Chad and Meghan have been constantly working with insurance to get as much as possible covered. Unfortunately, this surgeon is out of network, which means costs will be very high. Also since they had to switch to Chad’s insurance, they have to restart their out of pocket maximum.

Since the location of the surgery is over 3 and a half hours away, Meghan and Chad will also be taking off a considerable amount of time from work.

With all of these factors considered, the financial burden is mounting for their family.
