Yesterday on 4/26/2024 a major tornado tore through the Omaha metro. Our home was in the center of it. It totally feels like déjà vu, because only 5 years ago we were going through a similar natural disaster with the 2019 flooding. The damage from this tordano is even more severe for us than the flood though. Fortunately our home was spared from any major damage, just some broken windows and missing siding, etc. But our barn took more damage, our horse shelters are gone, my observatory dome is gone, nearly every tree on our property has damage or was knocked over. Oh and debris is everywhere. The fact that our home didn't take severe damage is a miracle - our neighbors' homes to the north and south are completely destroyed. The roof of one of our neighbors is sitting in our pasture. One neighbor is in the hospital from some moderate wounds, the other family is doing ok with a few bumps and bruises. None of our family were at home at the time the tornado hit, so we are all doing just fine.
Yesterday we probably had close to 20 people show up to help start the clean up. Horses were being cared for, chainsaws were roaring, branches were being hauled to a massive burn pile, debris was being picked up. We are SO GRATEFUL to everyone who came so quick to help! Even strangers stopped to help. But that was probably 10% of the work. We have tons of fences down. More debris everywhere. Then repairs that need to begin. Right now we don't have power, hopefully that will be restored sooner than later, in the meantime we have a few generators going.
We are starting a Go-Fund-Me to help out with expenses for the repairs. We do have insurance, and that will help with a lot. But as we learned from the 2019 flood it doesn't help with everything. A lot of the damage was done to things that are NOT our actual home and won't be covered. And there are supplies, food, and more that we'll need to buy to get us through. The support that so many people gave us 5 years ago made a HUGE DIFFERENCE, and with more damage from this tornado I know we'll be in even more need this time. We also realize that many other people took damage from this storm, many lost everything. Admist a terrible situation we were protected by God's angels and we consider ourselves fortunate. So feel free to help whoever you are led to.
We appreciate your thoughts and prayers while we recover from this disaster. It's going to be a long road until we're fully back to normal. But with God's grace we will rebuild and be better off after this is all over. Thank you all.
