Support César's freedom and recovery!

Dear Community: If you support social, racial, environmental, and housing justice, here is your opportunity to support one of our community’s most valuable contributors to these fights.

César Aguirre (they/them & he/him) is a deeply involved and supported member of our Sacramento progressive community. They are a Board member of the Sacramento Community Land Trust, a member of Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), a regular door-knocker for progressive candidates, and a champion for bicycle and pedestrian safety. Friends of César have known them to bundle up and bike out to homeless encampments on winter nights to hand out hot coffee and blankets.

César has put themselves in the line of fire for over a decade and has unfortunately been hit with a devastating blow.

In July 2020, César was charged with toppling the statue of the racist Junipero Serra in Capitol Park. While our city was long overdue with removing this symbol of colonization and genocide, it is unjust that the District Attorney singled out and targeted César with all the charges. With the help of NorCal Resist and a lawyer, César’s charges were reduced to misdemeanor vandalism, and they were sentenced to 90 days in-home detention at the end of 2022.

Through a misunderstanding with the sheriff’s department, César was denied community service and in-home detention, and a warrant was issued for their arrest. César was arrested on Jan 11th, 2024 and will be released on Feb 22nd. Sacramento County Main Jail is notoriously inhumane. The brief encounters we’ve had with César have shown us treatment that is considered torture. César will need recovery funds in the way of therapy, living/housing costs, legal fees, and general support for lost job opportunities due to incarceration. This is a deeply traumatic experience that will set César back months, and we need to come together to reinvest in helping make our neighbor César whole after their release.

We are a group of César’s supporters - ranging from community organization leaders, environmentalists, neighbors, friends, and family - fighting for César’s wellbeing. We want to raise at least $20,000 for their recovery. We know César has touched over 1,000 lives with their kindness - so we know 1,000 of y’all will come through with at least $20 to reach our goal. Below is a list of orgs and causes that César has supported and worked with. If you recognise your fight, please come through to support your troop as César would for you.
