My partner’s mother, Cassie Dewes, has spent her life building and running her own small landscaping business. She’s been a hard-working, one-woman operation since before my partner, Paul, was born — relying entirely on her hands, strength, and determination to make a living.

Unfortunately, years of physical labor have caught up to her. Cassie now needs urgent rotator cuff surgery, scheduled for early November, and will be unable to work for at least six months while she heals. As a self-employed business owner, she doesn’t have paid leave or disability benefits, and government benefits are limited. That means her income will be $0 during recovery.

To make matters worse, her only vehicle — her work truck — recently broke down and needs a new engine (~$10,000), and her roof has started leaking. Everything seems to be happening at once, and it’s become overwhelming.
