Kevin and Jennifer Carter gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Cassian Alexander, on January 24th. They quickly realized that something was wrong when he stopped eating and pooping shortly after being born, and he was soon after diagnosed with Long Segment Hirschsprung’s Disease. Roughly 33–40% of his large intestine is affected and missing ganglion (nerve) cells. Because of this, that portion of his intestine will eventually need to be removed.

Cassian underwent an ileostomy surgery on January 30th and now has an ostomy bag. This allows his body to function properly while they wait for the next steps. His expected recovery time from the initial surgery is 7–14 days and they have recently started feeding training. Kevin and Jenn have been staying in a nearby hotel so they can be with Cassian as much as possible, although they are hoping a room at the Ronald McDonald House opens up.

In 4–6 months, Cassian will have surgery to remove the affected portion of his colon. After that, he’ll need a few months to heal, followed by a second surgery to reverse the ostomy and remove the bag. They are encouraged that in the long term, the expectation is that he should be mostly healthy and able to live a normal life.

As many of you know, health situations like this result in many bills. Jenn had an unexpected C section after some birthing complications so her recovery has been difficult as well. They do have health insurance, but will still have much that is due out of pocket. Kevin and Jenn have the biggest hearts and have helped others in so many ways over the years, including letting various people live with them at different times. Many have asked how they can help, so we set up this GoFundMe to help ease the financial burden and stress they are going through.

Of course, they are faithful that God is in control and are so grateful for the many prayers and people that have reached out to them as well.
