- My name is Rashidah Shakir-Blackshere. I live in Los Angeles. My husband Darius and I were blessed to visit the beautiful island of Carriacou in the Grenadines in February 2023.
Carriacou is a Kalinago word that means "surrounded by reefs", and the island's white sand and calm waters have always been popular tourist attractions. On July 1, 2024, Hurricane Beryl struck the island and 90% of the homes, businesses, cash crops, and municipal structures were destroyed in the natural disaster.
On the island, we made many new friends who shared their time and talents with us, and we want to help them rebuild. One of the best restaurants we visited was "Cashmere's", owned by Chef Cashmere Gay, born in Carriacou. The attached video shows before and after images of what he lost, and what he and many others on this serene island of 9000 people must painstakingly rebuild in the years to come.
My husband and I are donating time and money to help Chef Cashmere rebuild. Our goal is to get 100 (or more!) people to donate to this fundraiser. Cashmere currently works as a volunteer chef for NDMA (National Disaster Management Agency), and all donations will be used for his new kitchen equipment and building materials, including electrical, plumbing, and software. We know money is tight, but we thank you for giving from the heart and helping the beautiful island of Carriacou rise again!! ❤️
