Carol has been fighting a hard and courageous battle with melanoma, beating it in September 2023 and fighting its return in October 2023. In March of 2024 we learned that the cancer had spread to the majority of her upper lymph nodes. She began the highest form of treatments at the University of Iowa Cancer Treatment Center. The treatments unfortunately made her feel more ill, sometimes causing extreme fatigue, nauseau and stomach pains. Over the last month, it was decided to discontinue treatments while it was determined what was going on with her body. The tests revealed that she had a 4cm mass in her small bowel and the tumor on her lymph node in her throat has grown and is interfering with her ability to swallow. Surgery was not an option as she had lost ovver 30 pounds and was severely malnutritioned and would not have made it off the operating table. The NG tube was not an option as the tumor in her throat was blocking it from being inserted. Mom had set her elected wishes to never use a feeding tube or life saving measures. Therefore on 7/24/24 Carol was placed on hospice at home to pass away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. As of writing this on 8/3/2024, we have reached the beginning of the end. Her breaths are farther apart and she is beginning the final stages prior to passing. Carol has been the type to help take care of everyone her whole life, thus leaving her without any savings or life insurance. The funeral home has given us a quote for $3900 roughly. The family is doing everything they can to figure out how to pay for this. However, we could use any and all assistance anyone is willing to donate.
Update: 8/4/24 Carol has found a little fight in her and is still holding on.
