On behalf of my sister, Caroline, I want to share an update on her journey.
This spring, Caroline was diagnosed with a high-grade round cell sarcoma of the scapula (shoulder blade) — an extremely rare type of bone cancer caused by a genetic mutation called a KIFC1–PHF1 fusion. Stage IVB; at diagnosis, the cancer had already spread to nearby lymph nodes, but thankfully it had not reached her lungs or other organs.
Since then, Caroline has been undergoing intensive chemotherapy at MD Anderson. Our prayers were answered when we found out her tumor has responded incredibly well: her most recent scans showed a complete response on PET and a 90% shrinkage on MRI. This is against all odds and we praise Jesus more than anything. We also thank the endless prayers from our community.
These results have given us so much hope as she prepares for the next steps: major surgery on her shoulder and radiation therapy to ensure the cancer doesn’t return.
If you know my sister, you know how remarkable she is. Caroline is a mom to her sweet little boy, Valentino, and her strength and humor never stop amazing us.
How You Can Help
While we are grateful beyond words for her medical progress, this fight has brought huge challenges. Your support will help with:
- Medical expenses not covered by insurance
- Travel and lodging in Houston during treatment and surgery
- Childcare for Valentino while Caroline is in the hospital or recovering
Thank you for standing with her during this journey.
