Help Carol Scala Fight ALS: Medical Support Needed

In 2023, Carol Scala’s life took a tragic turn when she suffered an accident that resulted in a back and knee injury, sprained ankle, and a dropped foot. A nerve conduction study revealed peripheral neuropathy, and there was hope for recovery after nerve repair and therapy. But just when Carol was beginning to cope and recover, Hurricane Eileen and Milton passed through the area, and she experienced another serious fall. This fall severely impacted her mobility, which led to using a walker and fighting to maintain muscle strength. After numerous MRIs and X-ray tests, doctors discovered a pinched nerve and narrowing of the spinal column. Two surgeries were recommended by a neurosurgeon in Orlando.

Carol underwent further tests with a neurologist before going through surgery. After more extensive evaluations, electromyogram tests, and a nerve conduction study, including a second opinion from University of Florida Neurology, Carol was devastated to receive a diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

ALS is a progressive and fast-moving debilitating disease that affects nerve cells, leading to muscle weakness, loss of movement, and eventually paralysis with no cure. Carol is now facing a future where every day is a challenge, and she needs our help to manage the growing financial burden of ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

How You Can Help

The current medical expenses are overwhelming. On top of that, she needs critical therapies, physical and occupational therapy, as well as home modifications to accommodate her new mobility needs. These include handicap bathroom modifications and the installation of wheelchair-friendly systems to transfer from bed to wheelchair to ensure safety and to help live as independently and comfortably as possible to end of life.
