On Monday, October 7th, Carmen received a phone call informing her that her father fell 57 feet while working on a construction site. Her dad was airlifted to Chapel Hill and is in the Surgical ICU. He is paralyzed from the neck down, has a tracheotomy, he suffered a stroke and has numerous broken bones throughout his body. Needless to say, it is by the grace of God that he is alive.
Carmen has been by his side at the hospital since Monday. She will remain there this week as he undergoes several surgeries. At current, Carmen will have missed two full weeks of income along with her fiancé' who has had to take several days off already with more to come.
As you can imagine this type of financial burden is not easy. Trying to choose between paying your bills and being be by the side of a loved one who is fighting for their life is simply not fair, not to mention being away from your children, and sleeping in a hospital waiting room.
The PVM family is doing all that we can to fill Carmen's shoes here at the Market. If you come into PVM, you already know Carmen. She greets everyone with a smile and often calls them by name. Carmen started with us 7 years ago as a dishwasher. She quickly worked her way up to line chef - if you've had lunch with us, you've likely experienced the love that Carmen puts into the food that she makes. A mother of 3 (ages 4,5 and 13), Carmen needs all of our help to cover lost wages, pay for gas, daily parking at UNC and a hotel room to get a proper night's sleep.
Please help if you can. If you prefer to donate directly, please come by Pine Valley Market. Checks can be made directly to Carmen Gibson.
