On Holy Thursday, a moment that should have been filled with family, faith, and celebration, a Regis family was thrust into a nightmare. Carlos, a devoted father and son, was driving to Upstate New York to bring his elderly mother to a long-awaited Easter reunion. Instead of a joyful homecoming, Carlos was unexpectedly detained by ICE in Niagara Falls, despite having complied with every aspect of U.S. immigration law for over six years. When he was pulled from his car, his wife and young daughter were left stranded on the side of the road, unable to drive the vehicle—an act that left them frightened, vulnerable, and alone far from home. For two agonizing weeks, Carlos was held in Batavia ICE Detention Facility, separated from his family and denied the basic comforts of home. The heartbreak of this ordeal is compounded by the cruel irony of its timing and the dehumanizing nature of the event. Carlos has done everything right, building a life defined by hard work, legal compliance, and devotion to his loved ones. He reached for the American Dream, purchasing a house 8 months ago and completing more than 6 years of legal work in the United States. Most urgently, Carlos lives with a critical heart condition and relies on a pacemaker, daily medication, and specialized cardiac monitoring. In detention, these life-sustaining resources were dangerously unavailable or difficult to access, putting his health and life at grave risk. This is not just a legal issue; it is a humanitarian crisis that could have posed serious health risks to a beloved member of our community. The financial impact has been devastating. To secure Carlos’s release on a bond, our family was forced to put our primary home at risk. While in detention, he lost two weeks' worth of wages. His family incurred significant legal expenses, traveling to visit him, getting the stranded wife and daughter home, and staying in hotels in the Buffalo area long beyond Easter. Now the family is trying to pick up the pieces, help him recover, and deal with a new and pressing debt. This is a story repeated day after day in this country right now, but this time it has directly affected a member of our own Regis community. If you are able, please consider donating to help the family cover these costs. Your support will help them recover and restore hope in the face of injustice.
