Support Carla’s Battle with Stage IV Cancer — Help a Mother

My name is David Rodríguez, and I live in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Even though I’m thousands of miles away, this campaign is one of the most meaningful ways I can support my sister, Carla Elizabeth Rodríguez Abreu, who’s been living in Venezuela, a place I haven’t been able to return to in over twelve years. Carla is a 36-year-old mother and a recent university graduate who has spent the last few years battling cancer. She was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2022. Despite undergoing extensive treatment, she managed to complete her degree, all while raising her teenage daughter and relying on the unwavering support of our mother. To afford her initial treatment, they were able to sell the house they were living in at the time. It was a huge sacrifice, but it gave Carla a fighting chance and helped her get through that first round of cancer.

For a while, it seemed like the worst was behind us.

But earlier this year, we learned that the cancer had returned. Follow-up tests showed that it had spread to her liver and abdomen, and that malignant cells were now present in the fluid surrounding her organs. Her doctors have classified it as stage four, and they’ve recommended starting chemotherapy as soon as possible — eight sessions to begin with, though it’s likely just the start of a longer road ahead.

Each session costs around $1,500 USD. In Venezuela, only a few medications are covered by the healthcare system, and many are nearly impossible to find. Everything else — lab work, imaging, supportive medications, transfusions, transportation — must be paid upfront. And with the country’s inflation rate now the highest in the world, even basic necessities have become a daily struggle.

Through it all, our mother has remained the anchor of our family. She’s the one who’s been there every step of the way, caring for Carla and her granddaughter, making sacrifices no one should have to make. This campaign isn’t just to cover chemo. It’s to make sure Carla can get to treatment safely, that she has enough food in her stomach to withstand the medication, and that she can talk to a therapist about what she’s going through. It’s also about ensuring that her daughter doesn’t have to face losing her mother and her sense of stability at the same time.

We’ve decided to set an initial fundraising goal of $15,000. It’s not easy to put a number on something like this, and to be honest, I feel a bit overwhelmed asking for such a large amount of money. But every dollar truly makes a difference and brings Carla closer to the care she needs. This goal will help cover not just the chemotherapy, but also transportation, nutrition, and emotional support, ensuring Carla and our mother have what they need during this difficult time.

Lo hizo casi completamente sola. Su esposo la abandonó, y tuvo que depender únicamente de nuestra madre y de un pequeño grupo de familiares. Nuestra mamá —ahora jubilada y viviendo con una pensión que equivale a unos $20 USD al mes— se convirtió en su cuidadora, su enfermera y su apoyo emocional. Para poder pagar el tratamiento, pudieron vender la casa en la que vivían en ese momento. Fue un sacrificio enorme, pero le dio a Carla la oportunidad de luchar y superar la primera batalla.

Durante un tiempo, creímos que lo peor había pasado.

Pero a principios de este año supimos que el cáncer había regresado. Los exámenes revelaron que se había extendido al hígado y al abdomen, y que había células malignas en el líquido que rodea sus órganos. Los médicos lo han clasificado como etapa IV, y han recomendado iniciar quimioterapia lo antes posible: al menos ocho sesiones para comenzar, aunque probablemente este sea solo el comienzo de un tratamiento más prolongado.

Cada sesión cuesta alrededor de $1,500 USD. En Venezuela, solo unos pocos medicamentos están cubiertos por el sistema de salud, y muchos son casi imposibles de conseguir. Todo lo demás —exámenes de laboratorio, imágenes, medicamentos complementarios, transfusiones, transporte— debe pagarse de forma particular. Y con la inflación más alta del mundo, incluso lo más básico se ha vuelto inaccesible.

A pesar de todo, nuestra madre sigue siendo el pilar de esta familia. Ha estado ahí en cada paso del camino, cuidando de Carla y de su nieta, haciendo sacrificios que ninguna persona debería tener que hacer. Esta campaña no es solo para cubrir la quimioterapia. Es para asegurar que Carla pueda llegar a sus tratamientos de forma segura, que tenga suficiente comida para soportar los efectos secundarios, y que pueda contar con el apoyo psicológico que tanto necesita. También es para que su hija no tenga que enfrentar, a tan corta edad, la pérdida de su madre y de la estabilidad que le queda.

Pero cada dólar marca la diferencia y acerca a Carla al tratamiento que necesita. Esta meta ayudará a cubrir la quimioterapia, pero también transporte, alimentación y atención emocional, asegurando que Carla y nuestra madre tengan lo necesario durante este momento tan difícil.
