Support Care for Our Dedicated Community Hero

I am Lissa Bounds Hammond, wife of Sam Hammond. I want to share my husband's story with you and ask you for your help in caring for him in the final stages of his life. Here is his story:
Sam Hammond was born and raised in Ellicott City, Maryland. He attended Mount Hebron High School and graduated in 1972 excelling both in academics and sports.
Sam then set his goals to "Protect and Serve" his community, which he did for 41 years. Sam became a Howard County Police Officer. He received numerous awards for valor and courage and was named "Police Officer of the Year" by the Baltimore Sun. Sam also received formal departmental recognition for excellence in the performance of duties.
Later, martial arts became Sam's passion and another avenue of great accomplishment, leading him to win the 1995 International Competition in Okinawa, Japan as a 4th Degree Black Belt.
After retiring as a police officer, Sam served as Deputy Sheriff in Howard County wherein he protected the Circuit Court judges, and court staff in Historic Ellicott City, Maryland. Sam also worked in the Warrant Section, Prisoner Transport, and other units on the Office.
When he retired from his lengthy law enforcement career, Sam was experiencing difficult cognitive and physical symptoms. Multiple tests and evaluations resulted in a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia, a combination of Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's. Sam fell at home and suffered a fractured vertebrae which led to two hospitalizations and two assisted livings stays. Sadly, this dreaded disease has continued to progress.
Recent renovations are making it safer to receive care at home. Gilchrist Hospice is directing his medical care, and a part-time caregiving agency is assisting us.
The cost of assisted living has been staggering and more resources are needed to provide on-going care.
Sam has courageously lived his purpose to dedicate his life "to protected and serve"! Friends and family have asked how to best support Sam in this on-going health challenge. We are grateful to those who have rallied to create this avenue for his financial support!!
Thank you for your love and support! Sam Hamond & Lissa Bounds Hammond
