Hi friends and family, I’m reaching out with a heavy but grateful heart.
On Monday, January 20th I took Canon to the emergency vet for what we thought was only an intestinal blockage from a beef bone he had the night before. After about 36 hours of intensive care Canon had declined in health so much that the doctor’s began suspecting there was an underlying issue that was much more severe than a simple blockage. They began running a series of additional tests over the next couple of days and found that he was going into liver failure, had pancreatitis, and another number of his systems were inflamed and angry. On Thursday they started him on a feeding tube and Friday they began platelet transfusions, among another number of life supporting things to try and get a handle on whatever was taking him downhill so fast. There were a few points last week where the doctor’s thought he might not make it, though because they didn’t know what was causing the issues they had no way to tell which direction he might go or the likeliness of any sort of outcome.
To make a long story short, today marks day 9 of him being in the ICU and as of the last 48-72 ish hours Canon started making miraculous improvements. He’s walking on his own, eating wet food / has his appetite back, and his organ / blood test stats have made serious progress toward re-regulating. We’re not fully in the clear yet and are still unsure of what actually caused all of this - but we’re hopeful he’ll be able to leave the ICU to come home and continue healing in the next couple of days.
As everyone knows, Canon means the world to me and is pretty much the best dog ever. To know Canon is to love him. We’re really hopeful that if he continues on the current trajectory he’ll be able to get back to a normal life and will be with us for a long time to come.
I do have pet insurance for Canon, though it unfortunately only covers up to about $5,000 of the medical bills. At this stage the estimate they’re quoting is between $20,000 to $23,000 total, not including the follow up care to come.
If you can donate, share, or even send positive thoughts, it would mean everything to us. Every bit of help makes a huge difference.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for anything you can do.
With love,
Ashley
