This year for my birthday, in lieu of birthday gifts, I have decided to raise money for a cause that is near and dear to my heart and that has also affected me and my family personally.
March is also colorectal cancer awareness month and for those of you that may not know, I was diagnosed with colon cancer in August of 2024, and to be even more vulnerable, I have stage 4 colon cancer. Over the past year and a half, I have had multiple surgeries and many rounds of chemotherapy (too many to count), which in turn has led me to be currently No Evidence of Disease, which I am truly grateful for and beyond thankful to my team. I wouldn’t be here today without them. I’m also so blessed to have a wonderful support system. My family and friends are everything to me! I wouldn’t have been able to go through all of this without their love and support, which leads me to this…
There are many people that don’t have this kind of support and rely on Ubers to take them to and from treatment. There are many people who have to choose between gas money to get them to treatment vs. using that money for groceries. There are also many people who would love to have the opportunity to supplement their treatment with acupuncture (which I fully credit to helping me with my side effects from chemo) or wish to utilize the integrative medicine clinic, which insurance doesn’t cover any of it. I have been so fortunate and want to give back to others that are less fortunate. I would like to raise as much money as I can and then in turn buy as many Visa cards as possible, make little care packages, and then give them to my cancer clinic so that the nurses can pass them out to people going through treatment that are in need of extra help. They know their patients and their needs more than anyone else! These nurses have become my friends. I am still there every two weeks currently for maintenance chemotherapy.
A cancer diagnosis turns your world upside down and forces you into the fight of your life. It doesn’t care how old you are or that you are grieving the life you had before cancer. It doesn’t care that your children are scared of the chance of losing their mom or your husband losing his wife. It doesn’t care that you are terrified of the possibility of leaving the ones you love and a life that you cherish more than anything. It gives you no choice but to be strong. It also makes you appreciate the little things, the time you share with loved ones, the fact that you are here today!
