Help Me Support Camp George!

Howdy, friends! My name is Emilie, and I'm raising funds for Camp George, a super-special summer sleepaway camp, run by the Tourette Association of America's Southern California Chapter.
This will be my third time as a counselor at this amazing camp, which offers a unique opportunity for kids ages 7-17 with Tourette Syndrome (and their parents/guardians) to explore the great outdoors, engage in exciting activities, and build lifelong friendships in a safe and inclusive environment.
One of the special things about Camp George is that--like the campers--most of the counselors also have Tourette Syndrome (TS)!
I have personally lived with tics and the comorbid symptoms of TS since early childhood, though I didn't realize I had TS until I was in college, and I didn't receive a formal diagnosis until I was in my mid-20s. I spent years wondering why I had uncontrollable urges to make certain movements and noises, while none of my peers seemed to have the same issue. I was frustrated with my mind and body, and I often times felt weird and alone.
Camp George provided me with a community of people who fully understand the Tourette experience. Being part of this community helped me to understand and advocate for myself, as well as to gain self-assurance in my condition. Camp George has changed--and continues to change--the lives of so many families affected by TS by providing critically-needed support systems and education.
All fundraising for Camp George is used to support camp costs and
spread awareness and advocacy for Tourette Syndrome. Your donations help the Tourette Association of America make a difference by contributing towards efforts like:
- Providing crucial educational resources to families and individuals navigating Tourette Syndrome.
- Offering advocacy programs that promote awareness and understanding in our communities.
- Facilitating support groups where individuals and families can connect and share experiences.
If you know me personally, you may or may not have been surprised to learn that I have Tourette Syndrome. Symptoms are not always immediately obvious, and there are many misconceptions about the condition, such as the myth that most people with TS have swearing tics.
