Support Camila's Thyroid Surgery

Dear family, friends, and kind strangers:

Asking for help is very difficult, painful, and out of character for me, but for my daughter I will do anything to take good care of her. As I wrote this, tears were streaming down my face. I truly appreciate you taking the time to read below and consider helping my daughter and I during this time of need.


This summer my 11-year-old daughter Camila went for a normal yearly physical and in one second our lives changed forever. She was immediately rushed to get testing done, ultrasounds, and a biopsy. As an autistic child this was very hard for her, but the process was not over. On August 23rd, I received the worst news a parent can get. Camila has a thyroid nodule that is growing at a significant rate, and surgery is imminent to remove half of her thyroid. The doctors state this is rare in children with a 50% probability that it can be cancer. If this is the case, she will need a second surgery to remove the rest of her thyroid. Due to this, we were referred to Duke Hospital in Durham, NC.  While Duke is four hours away from where we live in Asheville, this is one of the few hospitals that specializes on children’s thyroid issues in North Carolina.


Camila is such a vibrant, funny, and positive girl. She has embraced this in such an amazing way, so she named her nodule Nick. Camila makes up funny stories about Nick the nodule and how he needs to be evicted, and does this to make this situation easier to handle. While we are trying to maintain a positive outlook on this, be grateful for the lessons we are experiencing, and laugh in the face of adversity, the financial obligations have become extremely high and overwhelming.

Even though I have taken any extra work I could get in addition to my current job, health expenses have become insurmountable between co-pays, high insurance deductibles, genetic testing not covered by insurance, anticipated costs after the deductible is met which is 20% of surgery and medical expenses, her new diet and expensive supplements to be healthy for her surgery (and after), and related travel expenses to Duke since she needs to be seeing regularly. 

I am already in debt for $6,000 of pre-op medical expenses, and expecting at the minimum an extra $6,000 of post-op expenses based on the deductible, cost of surgery, and other required medical testing.

I humbly ask for your help. As a single mom raising Camila on my own, it has become unmanageable to do this alone.
Anything you can do to help us will be greatly appreciated. Your contributions will help Camila get her necessary surgery done, in order for Camila to have a brighter future, and avoid getting cancer. Pedir ayuda es muy difícil, doloroso, e inusual para mí, pero por mi hija yo haría lo que sea para cuidarla bien. Mientras escribía esto, lagrimas corrían por mi rostro. Yo realmente aprecio que ustedes estén tomando el tiempo de leer lo siguiente y consideren ayudar a mi hija y a mi durante este tiempo de necesidad.
Este verano mi hija de 11 años Camila fue a una cita normal de su físico anual y en un segundo nuestras vidas cambiaron para siempre. Ella tuvo que inmediatamente hacerse pruebas, ultrasonidos, y una biopsia. Siendo una niña autista esto fue muy difícil para ella, pero el proceso no había terminado todavía. En Agosto 23, yo recibí las peores noticias que una madre puede recibir. Camila tiene un nódulo en la tiroides que está creciendo a un ritmo significativo, y cirugía es inminente para remover la mitad de su tiroides. Los doctores afirman que esto es raro en niños, con un 50% de probabilidad que pueda ser cáncer. Si este es el caso, ella tendría que tener una segunda cirugía para remover el resto de su tiroides. Dado esto, nos refirieron al hospital de Duke en Durham, Carolina del Norte. A pesar de que Duke está a cuatro horas de distancia de donde nosotras vivimos en Asheville, este es uno de los pocos hospitales que se especializan en problemas de tiroides en niños en Carolina del Norte.
Camila es una niña tan vibrante, divertida, y positiva. Ella ha aceptado esta situación en una manera asombrosa, y le ha nombrado a su nódulo Nick. Camila inventa historias graciosas sobre Nick el nódulo y como el necesita ser desalojado de su casa, y ella hace esto para hacer la situación más fácil y llevadera. A pesar de que nosotras estamos tratando de mantener una perspectiva positiva sobre esto, ser agradecidas por las lecciones que estamos experimentando, y reírnos ante la adversidad, las obligaciones financieras se han vuelto extremadamente altas y abrumadoras.

A pesar de que he tomado cualquier trabajo adicional que podía obtener además de mi trabajo actual, los gastos médicos se han vuelto insuperables entre copagos, deducibles del seguro de salud, exámenes genéticos que no son cubiertos por el seguro, gastos anticipados después de que se alcance el deducible que serían 20% de la cirugía y gastos médicos, y los gastos de viaje relacionados con ir a Duke ya que ella necesita visitas regulares.

Yo ya tengo una deuda de $6,000 de gastos preoperativos, y anticipo a lo mínimo unos $6,000 extra de gastos posoperativos basado en el deducible, costo de cirugía, y otros gastos médicos requeridos.  

Humildemente pido por su ayuda. Como madre soltera criando a Camila por mi cuenta, se ha vuelto inmanejable hacer esto sola.
