This GoFundMe is to help with the ongoing medical expenses for the Whittington family as they navigate a rare genetic disease requiring potential multi-organ transplants that two of their three children inherited.
Cameron, the oldest of the three will soon be 13, has been living with Nephronophthisis (NPHP3), a rare genetic disease affecting his liver and kidneys, since his diagnosis at the age of 9. In April 2024, his kidney function required him to begin peritoneal dialysis from home for 8-10 hours a day, 7 days a week. Subsequent pediatric consultations have been ongoing, with the goal of placing him on the transplant list. Cameron's mom, Rebekah, is his caretaker around the clock, and teacher as he is not able to attend school.
Recently, Cameron was approved to participate in a clinical trial for medication aimed at slowing the progression of his liver disease. While this trial has shown significant symptom improvement, it will not reverse existing liver damage. A recent liver biopsy is assisting his medical team in determining the extent of liver involvement and whether a kidney or combined kidney-liver transplant will be required.
In the coming week, the medical team will be referring Cameron to Houston for further evaluation and testing to be conducted by a multidisciplinary team. This process will involve a week-long stay in Houston beginning May 19-23. Their comprehensive assessment will help determine a treatment plan tailored to Cameron's specific needs, with consultation between their team and his pediatric specialists here in New Orleans.
Considering Cameron's current condition, it is likely that a liver transplant will become necessary. The medical team is weighing the options of proceeding with a simultaneous kidney-liver transplant or waiting for a future kidney transplant and postponing the liver transplant if possible.
Given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding transplantation costs, it is difficult to estimate the full expense of this process. Cameron has already reached his out-of-pocket maximum for in-network expenses, and the upcoming procedure will be out-of-network, with associated costs are extremely expensive along with expenses for many trips to New Orleans and Houston.
We appreciate any prayers and support you can offer during this time, as we navigate the complex process of securing Cameron's future medical care.
