I first met my niece Camdyn when she came into our lives at just three years old, a spirited little girl with the most infectious laugh you could imagine. Over the years, that laughter grew alongside her fierce determination, kindness and love as an incredible big sister, daughter, niece, cousin, granddaughter and friend. Fourteen years later, Camdyn, a vibrant 17-year-old was recently accepted into Kinesiology for Fall 2026, with dreams of becoming an Occupational Therapist and helping others live their best lives.

Everything changed at the end of November 2025. Camdyn developed a rare complication from the Epstein-Barr virus (which causes mono) called ADEM - Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis. This condition causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the protective coating of neurons in the brain. While many recover quickly, Camdyn’s journey has been far more difficult. Despite having received several treatments to try to reverse the process that has affected her brain, she remains in hospital in Regina and requires significant care.

Camdyn opens her eyes at times, but she is not alert or interactive and cannot follow commands. She currently cannot move her right side and has only minimal purposeful movement on her left. She has a tracheostomy to assist with breathing and a feeding tube for nutrition. The long-term effects are still uncertain, but we know she will face significant ongoing medical needs and challenges including specialized equipment and 24-hour care.

This has been a devastating and life-altering event for our family. Many people have asked how they can help during this heart-wrenching time. With her father, Josh’s, permission, I’ve created this GoFundMe page to provide financial support while Camdyn is in the hospital and, most importantly, to help cover her ongoing care needs over the next months to years.

UPDATE - Jan 4/2025:

Thank you all for your generous donations, thoughts and well wishes.

We wanted to give an update regarding Camdyn’s health status:

In the past few days, Camdyn miraculously has become very responsive! She is still not able to talk due to the tracheostomy or move the right side of her body, but she is using hand gestures on the left side, nodding and mouthing words trying to talk to answer questions. She is smiling, laughing, and interacting with her family. Even rolling her eyes at her Dad’s jokes! Camdyn will still require significant care and equipment going forward. There is still a very long road ahead, but this is amazing progress and we are so grateful.
