Our son Cal has Hirschsprung’s disease, which means a portion of his bowel does not function as it should. When he was about 3 months old, he had surgery to remove part of his colon in hopes of allowing him to use the bathroom regularly. Within his 2 years of life, we’ve been admitted to the hospital countless times due to his inability to produce a bowel movement and had many, many surgical procedures to try minimally invasive techniques.
During our latest surgical procedure, a biopsy of his colon was analyzed, and it was determined that more colon should be removed. However, with his recent sickness, we need to give his colon a break in general. With the help of many specialists we’ve come up with a great surgical plan.
Cal will be completing a series of surgeries at both MUSC here in Charleston, SC, and Children’s National in Washington, DC:
June 25th - MUSC - ileostomy procedure
August 3rd - CN DC - contrast enema
August 4th - CN DC - clinic appointment
August 10th - CN DC - redo pull-through
TBD - MUSC - scope of pull-through
TBD - MUSC - ileostomy reversal
This will be a lot for our little guy, and we want to give him the best summer possible.
We’ve started this GoFundMe as our insurance will only cover basic medical supplies for Cal. We would love to get additional items to allow Cal to swim during the summer, order high-quality bags that reduce the number of bag changes, and supplies that are not considered a “necessity” but aid Cal’s comfort. We would also use this money to help pay for flights/hotels for the DC procedures. Any and all remaining money will be contributed to Cal’s 529 account!
