Two perfectly playful puppies’ lives saved (with only four minutes to spare):

I had just gotten home from work and was doom-scrolling before a nap when I saw a video of two soulful-eyed puppies at the Devore Animal Shelter. They were to be euthanized that day, and while I’m used to seeing last minute saves, there had been no adoption update on the post.

I called the shelter and was told they were still alive, but that I would need to get there in person as fast as possible in order to try to save them. There was no guarantee they would be there to greet me. I JUMPED in my car (with my own small pup, Roo) and started driving to San Bernardino in Rush-hour Friday traffic.

Initially my gps SAID 2.55 hours, but my ETA continued to be later and later. I was racing time (and my gas tank as I couldn’t make any stops) in order to get there in time. Even then, there was no guarantee the puppies would still be alive when I got there.

At this point, I posted a video to instagram sharing my mission (get the dogs out), my plan so far and pleading for guidance and support. A couple rescues came through to garner some support for the young girls. So many people (friends, strangers, etc) came through with connections to rescues, guidance and offering to help however they could.

It’s true, having a team behind you makes all the difference

A few hours into driving, I got really worried. My ETA kept bouncing around and traffic seemed endless. But with some luck, I got there and claimed them with 4 minutes to spare.

I signed, paid the fees and and brought them to my car where my own 4-yo pup seemed to understand. Everyone was calm. I think Roo’s calm and therapeutic presence helped the young girls to know they were safe.

I was so happy that I was able to save them, I sat in the car with them in silent relief.

They were nervous to get out of the car once we arrived home, but almost immediately the Calvary showed up with leashes, food, treats, pee pads…and helped physically carry the two girls up into my apartment. Where they……IMMEDIATELY got comfortable . They were playing and kissing, trying to score treats and exploring!!

I think they like their current home.
My ray-of-light roommate, Kat, is taking this on with me. Neither of us were prepared in the slightest for this adventure, but as soon as I shared the listing with her, we both knew we were 100% committed.

Moving forward, we are going to get the girls settled and soon start taking applications for adoption. One of our girls needs to be spayed before she can be adopted and they will both need another round of vaccines.

Any monetary help for supplies, fees, veterinary care would help so much.

Once these babes are adopted, if we have any leftover funds, we will donate any extra funds to the rescues that supported us through this process. :)
