I’m not one to share my personal life or ask for help….
About six years ago, Caidence was in a car crash that fractured his spine. He was told he was young enough that the fracture would heal. After multiple years of pain injections, the fracture started to compress his spinal cord. On February 24, he was taken in for a spine fusion. His surgery went great. Two weeks post-op on March 10, he started to get severe headaches. He was taken to the emergency room with low blood pressure, high heart rate, and high fever. Being told he had less than 72 hours to live if he didn’t get treatment. They rushed him in for emergency surgery, finding meningitis, sepsis, and a severe spinal fluid leak. They repaired the leak and placed drain tubes. Thursday, March 13, he was not improving. He was taken in for a 3rd surgery where he had a lumbar drain and more drain tubes placed. He was taken to the ICU for 12 days. They put in a PICC line to administer antibiotics. That’s when we felt things had started to improve. Unfortunately, when they moved him to the MedSurg floor, he was still producing a lot of spinal leakage, leading to them performing yet another possible life-saving 4th surgery on March 28. Despite being on multiple antibiotics, there was still infection. His amazing doctor sent tissue biopsies to the University of Washington to get some clue as to why this is happening. After his release from the hospital, he will need multiple treatments in the hyperbaric oxygen chambers. (Unfortunately these are not covered by his insurance and will have to be paid for out of pocket), which could potentially be life-saving to help him heal properly. They are predicating at least 20 treatments. It’s a long road to recovery. He will be seeing the infectious disease doctor and follow-up appointments with his neurosurgeon as well as other doctors and home health for a minimum of 5 weeks. We are not yet in the clear. Even with a light at the end of the tunnel, there is a possibility of further surgeries and treatment. He is a single dad and has been unable to work and unsure of when he can return to work. My family has a stressful and unknown road ahead of us as we “white knuckle” it each day.
