Hi everyone,

My name is Michelle, and I’m writing this on behalf of my boyfriend, Byron.

Byron graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Civil Engineering and had just started his new job, eager to kickstart his career and keep doing what he loves. Like many young adults, he loves travelling, trying new foods, golfing, and snowboarding whenever he can.

Right after Christmas last year, Byron was diagnosed with Stage IV Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC), a rare type of head and neck cancer that has already spread to multiple bones and lymph nodes. He’s only 24 years old, and this diagnosis has completely changed our lives overnight.

He’s been so strong through everything — the tests, the treatments, the side effects — and he’s still fighting every single day. His doctors here in Edmonton, Alberta are doing everything they can, but the treatments available here are focused on keeping things under control — not curing the cancer.

We’ve found a specialized cancer clinic in Taiwan with extensive experience treating advanced NPC and offering proton beam therapy, which isn’t available in Canada. This gives Byron new options, more hope for more time, and a better quality of life. Unfortunately, none of this is covered by insurance or government funding — it’s entirely out of pocket.

The cost of treatment, travel, and living expenses in Taiwan is estimated at $200,000 CAD — far more than we can afford alone. That’s why we’re asking for help from family, friends, and kind strangers.
