Byron Neal is a 74-year-old shoe shiner who has become a beloved figure in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Known as “the light on the corner,” Byron is the kind of person who makes a neighborhood feel like home. His warmth, kindness, and dedication to his craft have touched countless lives, and he’s always ready with a smile or a word of encouragement for anyone who passes by.
Earlier this year, our community came together to help Byron purchase a Collins Continental Shoeshine Stand, which he is now working on getting street ready. Recently, I filmed a video with Byron about his life and work as a shoe shine man (View Video Here). The video has reached over 1.5 million people, and the outpouring of support from strangers has been incredible. Many have asked how they can help Byron directly, which is why I’m starting this fundraiser.
Byron continues to face significant challenges, including homelessness, but he remains determined to be a positive role model and mentor for others in our community. The funds raised here will go toward Byron’s essential living expenses—things like food, warm clothes, and daily needs. Byron is known for selflessly supporting those around him who need help, now the community has a chance to support him. If Byron has ever brightened your day or inspired you, please consider donating to help him keep shining his light in Park Slope.
