POC women face systemic healthcare inequality that impacts access and quality of care. There is a heavy reliance on Medicaid-based programs in low-income POC communities; however, many women face long wait times and fail to receive adequate regular prenatal care and counseling. Black women are 3-4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues, 14.8% more likely to have preterm births, and have infant mortality rates that are 2.5x higher than White women. The wealth gap in Charlottesville, VA, is higher than the national and Virginia averages, exacerbating barriers to healthcare for pregnant women. Charlottesville also has few doula and midwife resources, with long hospital wait times at UVA Health and Martha Jefferson Hospital. BumpRise is working as an offshoot of HealthTech 4 Medicaid, a national nonprofit that networks and inspires innovation in the Medicaid space to broaden coverage and healthcare access for vulnerable communities. BumpRise provides a more focused and holistic educational lens onto the women in the Charlottesville community to spur quality healthcare access and more regular counseling and patient advocacy. Its mission is to increase access to more regular prenatal care and educate women on prenatal care and sexual health. Please donate to support our bimonthly events!
