The arboretum at Rigler Elementary in northeast Portland is a unique wonder, featuring more than 100 different varieties of trees, from the Lacebark Pine to the Persian Ironwood to a hardy Chinese Rubber Tree. While it exists thanks to longtime collaborations between Portland Parks & Recreation and the school and neighborhood community, it’s largely a testament to the dedication of retired horticulture professor and Tree Steward, Bruce Nelson, who has dedicated his time to the project for nearly 3 decades. Bruce has tended the trees, organizing neighborhood mulching parties and covering tree maintenance on his own dime. This work would not have been done without his tireless work.
Bruce’s latest project is three permanent, high-quality benches installed around the perimeter of the arboretum. We’re asking our community to come together to support this unique urban forest by helping to offset Bruce’s costs. Please donate to this GoFundMe and help us spread the word. Thank you!
