Support Bruce Litton as a New Amputee
Donation protected
On August 16 Bruce went in for what we thought was going to be a one time surgery to clean out plaque and blood clots that had built up in his lower right leg. However, the issue was much worse than what the doctor initially thought and he underwent 5 additional surgeries to try and clean out the vein and regain blood flow to his lower leg and foot. One effort included a vein bypass where a vein from his left leg was transplanted to the right. These efforts, although mighty, did not result in the issue being fixed. The only option left at this point was to amputate the now dead parts of his leg.
Bruce had his lower right leg amputated below the knee on Wednesday, August 30. The doctors were not sure if the knee was going to be viable until during the surgery and they still are not 100% sure that he will be able to keep the knee but we are hopeful. If, as he heals, the doctor believes there will still be issues in the knee, they may have to go back and remove it as well for an above-the-knee amputation.
He is doing very well as of right now! Physically and mentally! He has had lots and lots of friends and family come visit him in the hospital to help him in this journey and we are very grateful for the love and support everyone has shown.
Bruce is an avid mountain bike rider and kayaker. He is heavily involved with the Cypress Creek Mountain Bike group (CCMTB) and has been a Special Olympics Kayaking coach for about 13 years and served as the USA Special Olympics World Games kayaking coach in 2015. Therefore, he is determined to get to a place where he can continue these pursuits once he regains mobility. A part of this will be getting a cool new prosthetic leg! We are very hopeful that he will have a swift recovery and will get back to these passions soon.
Of course, with 7 surgeries, the residential rehab facility he will be going to next, and finally the prosthesis that he will be getting, the medical costs are going to be substantial, even with insurance. Truly, any amount large or small is significant and we are extremely grateful. Bruce, as well as the rest of the family have a very positive outlook on the outcome of the situation and for what's to come and are eternally thankful for the people in our lives that have been so supportive.
