Hello, Earthlings. It is I, ⋔⏃⍀⏁⟟⋏, from the planet ☊⌰⟒⎐⟒⌰⏃⋏⎅. Through an intergalactic staffing agency, I have been hired by the second-year MFA students—Kurt Chiang, Ann Marie Dorr, Claire Greising, and Andrew Hardigg—at Brooklyn College, who are raising funds for their upcoming performing arts festival, Bring A Weasel and a Pint of Your Own Blood Festival. I am told that this is a beloved and time-honored tradition at Brooklyn College.

I have also learned that Weasel Fest was created in the days of yore by the former head of the playwriting program Mac Wellman along with students Erin Courtney, Kate E. Ryan, and Karinne Keithley Syers. The festival is now in its 17th year. (A "year," by the way, is a human unit of time. Time was created to measure things like how long a Hot Pocket must spin under radioactive waves before it’s ready for consumption.) In my research, I have learned that 17 years is a very long time for a student-run festival to survive.

The MFA students will self-produce and self-fund the presentation of their fully produced new plays, which, per tradition, have been written in response to the prompt of “Science Fiction” given by Dennis Allen II, co-chair of the program alongside Sibyl Kempson with tutelage from Elana Greenfield. These students are seeking funding to cover the costs of the performance venue, hiring actors, securing a director, building the set, sourcing costumes, and acquiring insurance. (Insurance is a fascinating human concept: one theoretically purchases it to provide help in case of an emergency, but based on my field research, this rarely happens in an efficient or mutually satisfying manner when an emergency occurs.)

The playwrights are turning to their community to help keep this festival going and bring their work to life. After much trial and error in the multiverses adjacent to this one, I have concluded that GoFundMe is the optimal way to bring attention to this need, communicate information about the need, and ask for assistance from the playwright’s friends, families, professional colleagues, and other Earthlings they frequently cohabitate with such as their dwelling mates, dental assistants, and former lovers.

We do not have “art” on my home planet of ☊⌰⟒⎐⟒⌰⏃⋏⎅. (We do have music which– through my travels– I have confirmed sounds like the grinding teeth of a shark with sleep apnea.) However, I have been thoroughly impressed with the work coming from the Brooklyn College MFA playwrights, and it is my honor to help them realize their work. On their behalf, thank you for supporting experimental theatre and contributing to Bring A Weasel and a Pint of Your Own Blood Festival.
